Wa & the Upper West
Upper West Region · Hippos · Mosques · Palaces
The Wa Naa palace, Sudano-Sahelian mosques, the Gwollu defence wall and hippos on the Black Volta.
About Wa & the Upper West
Wa, capital of the Upper West, is a calm town with a strong Islamic heritage, the palace of the Wa Naa and the old mosque at nearby Nakore. Further north, the remains of the Gwollu wall tell the story of resistance to slave raiders.
The highlight for many visitors is the Wechiau community hippo sanctuary, where canoe trips on the Black Volta come close to wild hippos.
Travel tips
Wa has a small airport. The Wechiau sanctuary is best visited early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
