View over Kejetia Market, Kumasi

Kumasi

Ashanti Region · Culture · Crafts · Royal heritage

The heart of the Ashanti kingdom: royal history, kente and adinkra craft villages and one of West Africa's biggest markets.

About Kumasi

Kumasi is the historic capital of the Ashanti kingdom and still its cultural centre. Visit the Manhyia Palace Museum to learn about the Asantehene and Ashanti history, then explore Kejetia Market, one of the largest open-air markets in West Africa. Outside the city are the craft villages: Bonwire for kente weaving and Ntonso for adinkra cloth printing. Lake Bosomtwe, a crater lake about an hour away, is a peaceful place to stay.

Travel tips

Kumasi is about five hours by road from Accra, or a short domestic flight. If your visit falls on an Akwasidae day, ask us about attending the celebrations with a local guide.
