Tamale & the Northern Region

Northern Region · Culture · Markets · Gateway to the north

The north's biggest city and its travel hub: Dagbon culture, smocks and shea, and the gateway to Mole and beyond.

About Tamale & the Northern Region

Tamale is the capital of the Northern Region and the main hub for travel in northern Ghana, with daily flights from Accra. The city has a relaxed, bicycle-filled pace, a busy central market and the Centre for National Culture, where you can see crafts and smock weaving. From Tamale, roads lead west to Mole National Park, north to Bolgatanga and east to the Dagbon heartland around Yendi.

Travel tips

Most northern trips start with a flight to Tamale. It is hottest from February to April; the harmattan (December to February) brings dusty, hazy skies.
