Nalerigu & the North East

North East Region · Escarpment · History · Royal seat

The seat of the Mamprusi kings, an ancient defence wall and sweeping views from the Gambaga escarpment.

About Nalerigu & the North East

Nalerigu is the capital of the North East Region and the seat of the Nayiri, king of the Mamprusi people. Parts of a centuries-old defence wall, built against slave raiders, still stand in the town. The Gambaga escarpment runs along the north of the region, and from Nakpanduri on top of the plateau the views stretch far across the plains.

Travel tips

Visit in the dry season (November to February), when tracks to the escarpment are passable. Accommodation is basic.
