Ghana's festivals are one of the best reasons to visit. Many traditional festivals follow local calendars, and their exact dates are announced by the chiefs, often only weeks ahead. The months below are typical. Tell us your dates and we will check what is on.

May

  • Aboakyer (Winneba): the deer-hunting festival of the Effutu people, with a ceremonial hunt and procession.

July and August

  • PANAFEST (Cape Coast): the Pan-African Historical Theatre Festival, held every two years, with performances and heritage events.
  • Emancipation Day (1 August): remembrance events at Cape Coast and Assin Manso.
  • Chale Wote Street Art Festival (Accra): street art, music and performance in Jamestown, usually in August.
  • Homowo (Accra): the Ga harvest festival, in August or September.

September

  • Fetu Afahye (Cape Coast): a colourful festival of the Oguaa people, with a grand durbar of chiefs.

November

  • Hogbetsotso (Anloga, Volta Region): the Anlo Ewe festival marking their migration, with a durbar and drumming.

December

  • December in Accra: concerts, beach parties, weddings and family reunions, often called "Detty December". Hotels and drivers book up months ahead.
  • Afrofuture (Accra): music and culture festival over the New Year period.
  • Ankos (Sekondi-Takoradi): a masquerade street carnival around Christmas.

Throughout the year
