Most international visitors to Ghana land at Accra International Airport (code ACC), known until February 2026 as Kotoka International Airport. Here is what to expect between stepping off the plane and arriving at your hotel.
Before you fly
- Visa: most visitors need a visa arranged before travel. Citizens of ECOWAS countries do not. Check the current rules for your nationality with the Ghana Immigration Service or your nearest Ghana embassy.
- Yellow fever certificate: you will be asked for proof of yellow fever vaccination on arrival, so keep it with your passport.
- Your address in Ghana: have the name and address of where you are staying ready for immigration.
Immigration and baggage
International flights arrive at Terminal 3. After immigration and baggage reclaim, you pass through customs and out into the arrivals hall. At busy times, especially in December and in the evenings when several long-haul flights land, allow extra time.
Money
Ghana's currency is the cedi (GHS). You will find ATMs and currency exchange at the airport. Cards are accepted at larger hotels, restaurants and shops, but carry some cedis for taxis, markets and small purchases. Mobile money is used everywhere in Ghana.
Staying connected
You can buy a local SIM card from the main networks in Ghana. SIM registration requires ID, so have your passport with you. A local number makes WhatsApp calls with drivers and guides much easier.
Getting into the city
The airport is close to central Accra, but traffic can be heavy, especially at rush hour. Your options:
- A pre-booked pickup: a driver waits at arrivals with your name and knows where you are going. This is the easiest choice after a long flight. Book an airport pickup.
- Your hotel's shuttle: some hotels offer one; check when you book.
- Taxis and ride-hailing apps: available outside arrivals. Agree the fare before you set off if there is no meter.
Good to know
- Ghana uses GMT all year round, with no daylight saving.
- Plugs are the three-pin UK type (Type G), at 230 volts.
- English is the official language, and you will hear Twi, Ga, Ewe and many other languages too.
Akwaaba, welcome to Ghana.
